The Hydrometric and Groundwater Section of the EPA jointly operates a hydrometric network with the local authorities. The EPA also maintains the national groundwater monitoring network to facilitate assessment under the Water Framework Directive. Data loggers were initially installed on the network during the period 1999-2001 to replace autographic chart recorders. Telemetry was installed on a portion of the network in 2010 as this approach had the potential to improve efficiencies in relation to data collection. It is now proposed to install telemetry at all remaining locations on the surface water hydrometric network and on the groundwater level monitoring network.
